Legend has it that a man named Zhua Zai of the royal family during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), created a kind of wind instrument based on the eight-hole suona called the yanguanzi, making a great contribution to Chinese folk wind instrument development in the process. He founded an annual musical event, where suona musicians from across the country would gather on September 23 of the lunar calendar at Jiufeng temple to play. During this time some suona bands became famous in Qinyang. Their popularity even found its way into the local idiom 'without majin playing suona the bride would refuse to get on the marriage sedan', with 'majin' being the name of a popular suona band.
